The role of an IB Team Chair goes beyond leading evaluation visits or conducting workshops; it is about fostering a collaborative environment where schools feel empowered, supported, and understood. My journey in this role has been an enriching experience that combines diverse skills and mindsets. Let’s dive into the key attributes that shape my approach and how they translate into impactful outcomes.

1. Knowledgeable & Collaborative

As an IB Team Chair, it’s imperative to have a deep understanding of IB standards and practices. My role involves ensuring seamless collaboration between the IB Team and the school, providing guidance that is rooted in a robust knowledge of the program. This knowledge allows me to:

  • Offer constructive feedback and suggestions tailored to the school’s unique context.

  • Help bridge any gaps between school practices and IB expectations, facilitating a smooth and enriching experience for all stakeholders.

  • Foster an environment of shared learning, where the evaluation team can collaborate effectively with the school leadership, nurturing mutual respect and understanding.

This collaborative approach sets the stage for a reflective and growth-oriented dialogue that benefits both the school and the visiting team.

2. Positive & Reflective

Positivity and reflection are at the core of my leadership style. Building an open and respectful relationship with schools helps create a space for appreciative inquiry. In this process, I focus on:

  • Encouraging schools to reflect on their strengths and achievements while identifying areas for growth.

  • Approaching discussions with a positive mindset, emphasizing what is working well and how it can be further enhanced.

  • Supporting teams in navigating challenges with a reflective lens, turning potential roadblocks into opportunities for learning and improvement.

By fostering a positive and reflective atmosphere, I help create a supportive environment where schools feel confident to share openly and engage in meaningful dialogue.

3. Great Communicator

Effective communication is the backbone of any successful evaluation visit. Being a clear, concise, and timely communicator allows me to:

  • Maintain strong, open channels of communication with the school leadership team as well as the evaluation team.

  • Provide regular updates, feedback, and clarity on processes, ensuring everyone is aligned and informed throughout the visit.

  • Tailor my communication style to suit diverse stakeholders, from administrators to teachers, ensuring that the message is both effective and empathetic.

Clear communication builds trust, reduces misunderstandings, and creates a productive working relationship that drives the success of the visit.

4. Well-Organised

Organizational skills are vital in managing the logistical complexities of evaluation visits, especially when coordinating with international teams. To ensure a well-structured visit, I:

  • Meticulously plan and organize all necessary documents, ensuring that the visiting team has easy access to relevant information.

  • Carefully schedule meetings, taking into account different time zones and the availability of all team members, making sure no one feels left out or overwhelmed.

  • Anticipate potential challenges and prepare backup plans, ensuring the visit runs smoothly even if unexpected issues arise.

Being well-organized is about creating a solid foundation for the team, allowing them to focus on their core responsibilities without being bogged down by logistical concerns.

Inspiring Others & Problem Solver

Finally, beyond these core attributes, my role often involves inspiring others and serving as a problem solver. I aim to:

  • Lead by example, showing how a positive attitude, deep knowledge, and strong organization can turn a potentially stressful process into a rewarding experience.

  • Quickly adapt to changing circumstances, using creative problem-solving skills to address any issues that arise during the visit.

In essence, my role as a Team Chair is a blend of these interconnected qualities. It’s about striking the right balance between knowledge and empathy, planning and flexibility, and communication and collaboration. This holistic approach ensures that every evaluation visit is not just a process, but a valuable journey of growth and learning for everyone involved.
